About

Heroes, more often than not, come into our lives unexpectedly. Our hero, Luke, arrived 22 years ago and has been an engaging, motivating, and inspiring influence since that special day. If you used the word “enthusiastic” to describe Luke’s love of life and the way he embraces the opportunities each day offers, it might be an understatement. He actively lives each moment striving to attain his full potential and this philosophy has had a profound impact on the world around him. Luke on Facebook.

Luke does not have a specific diagnosis and has significant physical and developmental needs. He has used a wheelchair since he was a pre-schooler. Luke is non-verbal as well as deaf. He has taught himself to read lips and uses a combination of picture symbols, and simple signs and gestures to communicate. The story of his journey confirms his spirit and creativity

Luke has a profound influence on many individuals of all ages. He has been a life-changer for many students at Acadia University through their interactions with him as his volunteers with the SMILE Program, as care-givers, and as a friend when they continue to connect with him years after those experiences.
One of his teachers wrote a song about him

Luke graduated from high-school in 2012

He is now exploring his opportunities as an employee and entrepreneur. He participates in a workshop environment at New Boundaries and is working to establish his business selling popcorn as “The Popcorn Man: Kernel Sanford”.

We are now at the stage where Luke requires an accessible van to continue embracing life to the fullest, and so, we are welcoming the support of voters to help tell the story of our hero and expressing our gratitude for believing Luke embodies the spirit of Life Moving Forward.

There are many times in life where you are faced with the choice to see things as obstacles or opportunities. Luke has shown us that focusing on opportunities will provide a more complete and fulfilling life experience that ultimately leads to wonderful moments for those connected to our lives.
The hundreds of stories that will be shared promoting National Mobility Awareness Month will empower us to appreciate these local heroes who seek no glory, expect no reward, and demonstrate the capacity of unconditional love. We are blessed each day to witness just such a hero at his best, our son Luke.

    Dear Luke,
We are so very proud of you! I have known you since you were only days old when I had the thrill of holding you at the hospital. You and Mary-Beth became very close when you were in the same class for most of your elementary school years and have remained connected over the years and will for years to come. We will be watching while you make this transition from public school to your place in the community and we wish you the best of luck! You are a wonderful young man and bring such joy to those who know you!

Dear Luke, I can’t believe you are graduating, where did the years go? I still remember when you and Meg started school! It seems like yesterday. Your mom and I became good friends when you and Meg were babies and we have had many heart to heart talks about our special kids. You have taught us to be strong, probably because of your strong will and perseverance!! Now you are on to the next chapter in your life. You are very lucky to have a great mom, dad and sister who will help and support you wherever life takes you. We love that great smile and positive attitude and wish you the best of luck on your graduation. You make the world a better place and we love you. Wally,Lisa,Megan and Hannah Daniels.

    Congratulations Luke,
I remember when I first met you and worked with you at Wolfville Children’s Centre. You taught me about seeing the world from a different perspective. When I think about all you have accomplished, I am reminded that we all are here for a reason and it is important to work hard towards our goals and dreams. I can’t wait to hear what you will take on next. Keep working hard and it was great to hear from your mom that you are graduating high school.
    All the best,
    Emily

    Dear Luke,
I remember so vividly the first time seeing your mum and dad. It was at a meeting at the Valley Child Development Centre in Kentville. We had moved here from Dartmouth when Jenny was just over a year old and was told about this Early Intervention program. Your mum spoke so lovingly of you. Your mum and dad are the only parents that I can remember being at this meeting. That shows the impression they made on me. You have been blessed to have such wonderfully caring and devoted parents.
I know that you recognize me whenever you see me and that makes me so proud. Jenny and I are so grateful for The Alexander Society being the cornerstone of this journey together which has given us the opportunity to get to know and love you.
Congratulations on your big day, Lots of Love Mary and Jenny Coyle
